Pursue The Passion
Posted in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Inspiration and Motivation, Marketing, Uncategorized on 18.02.09 by Merlyn
About a week ago a good friend of mine Matt Wilson introduced me to Brett Farmiloe, the co-founder of PursueThePassion via email. This is what the email said.
Brett,
I’d love to make an introduction to a young film maker Patrick Sargent from http://workyourwayupfilm.com and http://workyourwayupblog.com . His entrepreneurial documentary just debuted last night.
Pat–check out Brett’s http://pursuethepassion.com I think there are huge opportunities for you guys to team up and get to know each other. Both your aspirations seem to be in line.
Keep up the entrepreneurial spirit guys!
Matt Wilson
A day or so after this I recieved an email from Brett where he kindly introduced himself to me and asked me about my project. He then asked if I would mind sending a copy of Work Your Way Up out to him in Arizona. I gladly agreed to send him a copy and Brett gave me his word that he would view the film and blast out his opinion on it through his blog. I sent out the film last Thursday and today I recieved a facebook message from Brett telling me he watched my film, wrote a blog post about it and also used twitter to help promote it. Obviously Brett is a man of his word.
Here’s a link to his blog post
Through this experience I learned several very valuable lessons, Here they are.
1.) The world is now an extremely small place, you can literally connect with anyone, anywhere, at any time. (I’m meeting with a guy from India this upcoming week in New York regarding Work Your Way Up…. more on that later)
2.) The ability to network and connect people who you think would work well together is absolutely crucial to being successful today. If you’re not doing it, start doing it today. (Matt Wilson obviously knows what he’s doing)
3.) And probably the most important lesson I’ve learned is that if you just go out there and do it, people are absolutely willing to help you. (As Brett Farmiloe showed today)
I hope you take a second to check out PursueThePassion.com because it’s an amazing site and they’re an amazing company. Who knows, maybe Brett will be featured in my upcoming film, wouldn’t that be something.

The Release of Work Your Way Up
Posted in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Inspiration and Motivation, Uncategorized on 28.01.09 by Merlyn
Today is January 28th, a very special day in my life. It is a very special day because it is the release of my first feature length film Work Your Way Up. It’s not simply a special day because the film has been released and now the possible monetary rewards are real. It’s a special day because of the Vastly Important lessons I have learned in my life through making this film.
Now you may ask me, what have I learned?
And here’s my answer:
I learned that if you come up with an idea and decide that you are going to whole heartedly pursue it until the end, no matter what obstacles you may encounter, then you will complete your project. I learned that when you approach people to help you in pursuing your dream, they will indeed help. I learned that pursuing a goal and a dream is one of the most fulfilling things you can do in life.
The making of this film has taught me that you can’t just talk about doing something, you actually have to go out and do it. I learned that in life, especially in 2009, you have to pursue what you are passionate about. No question about it. Life is too short to spend it doing stuff you don’t love.
I hope you take a look at this film, because it truly is a film for aspiring entrepreneurs, made by an aspiring entrepreneur. It’s both educational and inspirational, and the lessons are taught by those who have been successful in building their businesses.
Above all I hope you make that decision that you are going to spend your life pursuing the things you are passionate about!

Passion, Inspiration, Patience-Diddy
Posted in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Inspiration and Motivation, Uncategorized on 13.01.09 by Merlyn
A couple of the entrepreneur’s that I personally have a great deal of respect for are those in the field of Hip Hop. I’ve always looked up to Sean “Diddy” Combs, Jay Z, Dame Dash and Russell Simmons. These men have created some of the largest music labels of our generation, and have been involved with countless other entrepreneurial ventures.
For as long as I can remember I’ve loved music, and I’ve always particularly looked up to Jay Z as both an artist and an entrepreneur. I saw a lot of attributes that I admired and found in myself. Jay Z has the talent of an artist but dominantly the mindset of an entrepreneur. As an aspiring filmmaker and entrepreneur many times I find myself trying to balance the artistry and the business aspects of creating a film. It’s tough, but it’s essential in order to create the highest quality product and maintain ownership of its intellectual property, which ultimately leads to greater profits for you.
With “Notorious” being released this weekend I’ve found myself watching every possible trailer, interview and extra clip I can find on the internet. I remember how I felt when I saw the “Notorious” trailer for the first time. I felt truly inspired by it because I know so much about Biggie and Puff Daddy’s story. Their whole story is very intriguing. Coming up from nothing and chasing the dream of something you are truly passionate about is like nothing else in life, it’s truly intoxicating. When I saw that trailer for the first time I was sure that I wanted to be a filmmaker, it was a defining moment for me. I saw how powerful that trailer was for me, and I want to do something where hopefully I can make people feel the way I felt when seeing that trailer, for the rest of my life.
Check out this video with Puff Daddy on the big idea and learn how he worked very hard from the early years of his life to build the empire he has today. Even if you don’t like hip hop, please find the deeper meaning, which is finding something in your life you are truly passionate about and pursuing it to the absolute best of your ability.
I also included Jay Z’s Beach Chair which is a song that truly inspires me. I hope it does the same to you.
